Overview

In Spring 2006, the Whitman School of Management and the Ballentine Investment Institute at Syracuse University announced the creation of the Orange Value Fund program. Established as a rigorous two-year analyst program open to a carefully selected cadre of undergraduate Whitman students, the Orange Value Fund combines academic, research, money management and career components. Participating students take graduate-level classes for academic credit, perform thorough research on potential investments, write professional research reports, network with investment professionals and manage The Orange Value Fund, LLC. portfolio. As of its first closing in Fall 2006 the Fund had $1.1 million of assets under management. Today, the Fund manages nearly $1.5 million.

Our Investment Approach

The Orange Value Fund is modeled after the value investing philosophy of Martin J. Whitman.
The Fund intends to identify investment opportunities through intensive research of individual companies and will not generally focus on general market conditions and other macro factors. For these reasons, the Fund seeks investments in the securities of companies in industries that are believed to be temporarily depressed. In selecting individual issuers, student analysts will generally seek companies that are "safe" whose securities are "cheap". Safety characteristics include strong financial position, responsible managements and control groups, and the availability of comprehensive and meaningful financial information about them, and "cheap" securities are those priced at large discounts from either intrinsic or workout values.
